HERE’S HOW TO GET AN EXCLUSIVE FREE DOWNLOAD OF KICK-ASS #1
Mark Millar is behind the new run of his original Millarworld comic book, which has been revamped to feature a brand new superhero taking over the Kick-Ass mantle from Dave Lizewski.
Dave burst onto the scene in that famous green and yellow costume ten years ago, but now Patience Lee is rocking the colorful threads as she takes on the criminal underworld in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Patience is a brilliant black woman, a military veteran, and mother who returns from war to find her husband has split and she has a mountain of bills to pay.
Her superhero transformation comes from necessity more than morality, but that doesn’t mean she’s not doing good by being a modern-day Robin Hood and taking down rich bad guys to help not only her poor self, but others in her community.
Millar has previously spoken about why he made the new Kick-Ass a fierce black woman. “The reason she is black is that I got this feeling a while back that there are tons of white characters in comics; wouldn’t be interesting to have some who weren’t white?” he said. “I’ve created Asian, Indian, and African-American characters like Patience but superhero comics, up until a while back, really looked like a country club. It was weird.”
The first issue of Kick-Ass was released back in February and has been selling like hotcakes ever since. The issue’s first printing alone has already outsold the likes of Superman, Justice League, The Avengers, and Wolverine.
